Anxiety Q & A

by Weymin Hago, MD

What is anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious or stressed out from time to time, however, when anxiety interferes with a person’s day to day life and activities, it could be an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is a serious mental illness where the person suffers from constant worry and fear, that may be triggered by certain activities or situations. Anxiety disorder manifests in different ways including:

  • Panic Disorder: People with this variation have feelings of terror that strike suddenly with no warning and can result in panic attacks. Panic attacks often present symptoms such as sweating, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or a feeling of choking.
  • Social anxiety disorder: This variant involves overwhelming feelings of self-consciousness during everyday interactions. It is often rooted in a fear of being judged or embarrassed.
  • Specific phobias: When a person has an intense fear of a specific thing or situation it can result in overwhelming feelings of anxiety.
  • Generalized anxiety disorder: This type of anxiety disorder presents excessive and unrealistic worry and tension, even if here is nothing to arouse those feelings.

What causes anxiety disorder?

The specific causes of anxiety disorder, like other mental illnesses, are not known. It is very important to know that anxiety disorder is not due to personal weakness, bad upbringing, or other personal flaws. Research shows that mental illness is affected by factors such as brain chemistry and environmental factors.

What kinds of treatment can help with anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety depends on what will best help the patient. Some patients benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, or medication. Others may see an improvement by changing their diet and lifestyle habits and engaging in relaxation therapies. Dr. Hago will work closely with each patient to ensure that the best treatment plan for his or her needs is put into action.
